The 4 Levels of Happiness
-
Level 1: Pleasure & Material Comfort ( Laetus )
-
Focus: Immediate sensory satisfaction, physical comfort, and material possessions.
-
Source: Biological instincts and sensory faculties.
-
Limitation: Very short-lived. Relying solely on this level leads to the "hedonic treadmill"—where initial pleasure quickly turns into boredom, overindulgence, or an inner void.
-
-
Level 2: Ego-Comparative Achievement ( Felix )
-
Focus: Personal achievement, status, power, skill mastery, and winning.
-
Source: Self-consciousness and comparing oneself to others.
-
Limitation: Short-to-medium duration. Because it depends on being "better than others," it often triggers the comparison trap, chronic anxiety, jealousy, and fear of failure.
-
-
Level 3: Contributive & Empathetic Love ( Beatitudo )
-
Focus: Making a positive difference in the lives of others through empathy, service, and self-giving love (Agape).
-
Source: Empathy, conscience, and practical intellect.
-
Impact: Long-lasting and deeply fulfilling. It shifts your core question from "What can I get?" to "How can I serve?".
-
-
Level 4: Ultimate Transcendent Purpose ( Sublimitas )
-
Focus: Union with God and fulfilling the human desires for perfect Truth, Love, Justice, Beauty, and Home.
-
Source: Spiritual intuition and transcendental awareness.
-
Impact: Enduring and eternal. It satisfies the infinite longings of the human soul that finite material things can never fill.
-
How the Path Works
-
Proper Hierarchy: Lasting peace does not require rejecting physical comforts or personal achievements; it requires proper ordering.
-
Integration: Lower pleasures (Levels 1 & 2) find their healthy, joyful place when anchored by higher transcendent purpose (Levels 3 & 4).
True Happiness
Lasting peace does not require rejecting physical comforts or personal achievements; it requires proper ordering.
